What can artifacts tell us, and who owns the past?

This week, learners become archaeologists. They explore how we know anything about the ancient world when almost nothing survives intact. Through artifacts, excavation methods, and real case studies, students learn that archaeology is a careful science of clues, not direct answers. They also discover that interpretation always involves inference, and that new evidence can change what we think we know about the past.

SCIENCE FOCUS
This week introduces archaeology as a scientific process of reasoning from incomplete evidence. Students explore how archaeologists use physical clues, context, stratigraphy, and dating methods to reconstruct the past. A key focus is learning the difference between observation and inference—an essential scientific thinking skill that helps us build evidence-based explanations and revise our understanding when new evidence is discovered.
