Hands-On Activity: Domesticate an Animal
Big Idea
Domestication happens when humans and animals influence each other over many generations. Humans did not simply make wild animals “obey.” Instead, people repeatedly chose animals with helpful traits, and those traits became more common over time. By comparing a wild animal with a domesticated version, we can explore how selective breeding changes species.

Materials
  • Paper or notebook
  • Pencil
  • Colored pencils or markers
  • Animal reference images (optional)

What to Do

Step 1: Choose a Wild Animal
Choose an animal that humans might want to domesticate. This can be a real animal or an imaginary creature.

Examples:
  • Deer
  • Wildcat
  • Wild boar
  • Wild bird
  • unicorn
  • dragone
Write down the animal’s wild traits.

Think about:
  • How does it protect itself?
  • How does it find food?
  • How does it react to danger?
  • How does it behave around other animals?
  • What physical features help it survive?
Example:
Wild Fox
  • Easily frightened by humans
  • Hunts alone
  • Sharp teeth and claws
  • Excellent hearing
  • Fast and alert
  • Avoids unfamiliar places
Step 2: Decide What Humans Would Select For
Imagine humans begin living near this animal. What traits would make the animal easier and safer to live with?

Choose traits humans might encourage:
  • Calm around people
  • Less fearful
  • Social
  • Easier to feed
  • More cooperative
  • Less aggressive
  • Able to live near humans
Remember: humans cannot just choose what an animal looks like. The traits must be inherited and passed down.

Step 3: Create Your Domesticated Animal
Design what your animal might look like after many generations of selective breeding.

Step 4: Add Unexpected Changes
Scientists studying domestication have discovered that selecting for one trait can sometimes cause other changes.

Choose one unexpected change your animal develops:
  • Different coat colors
  • Smaller size
  • Floppy ears
  • Curly tail
  • More playful behavior
  • Changes in body shape

What's Really Happening (Caregiver Explanation)
This activity models the process of artificial selection, where humans influence which traits become more common in a population by choosing which animals reproduce.

Real domestication took thousands of years. Early humans did not create detailed breeding plans. Instead, they made small choices again and again: keeping calmer animals nearby, protecting useful animals, and allowing those animals to reproduce.

Over many generations, inherited traits changed entire populations. Wolves became dogs, wild aurochs became cattle, and wild horses became the animals that transformed transportation across the ancient world.

Domestication also caused unexpected changes. The Belyaev fox experiment showed that when scientists selected only for friendliness, other traits (such as coat color, ear shape, and behavior) changed too. This demonstrates how connected traits can be within living things.

Over many generations, helpful inherited traits can become more common in a population. While domestication happens because humans select traits, natural selection happens because the environment affects which traits help organisms survive.

Step 1: Explore the Simulation
Open the Natural Selection simulation and spend a few minutes exploring.
Notice:

  • What environmental factors can you control?

Step 2: Test Fur Color
Start with a population of rabbits.
Change the environment and observe:
Question: Which fur color helps rabbits survive better in this environment?

Step 3: Test a Different Trait
Experiment with another trait.

Step 4: Connect to Domestication
Think about the difference between what happened in the simulation and what happened with domesticated animals.

Natural Selection:

Domestication:
  • Humans choose which animals reproduce.
  • Humans select traits they find useful.

What's Really Happening (Caregiver Explanation)
This simulation models natural selection, where inherited traits influence which organisms are more likely to survive and reproduce in a particular environment. Over many generations, traits that provide an advantage may become more common in a population. 

Domestication is related but different. Instead of the environment selecting traits, humans do the selecting. When people repeatedly choose animals with certain traits (such as calm behavior in foxes or useful traits in livestock) those traits can become more common over many generations.

Together, natural selection and artificial selection show how populations can change over time.

Digging Deeper
Choose one trait from the simulation and imagine humans selecting for it instead.
