Mini Excavation Box
Create your own archaeological dig by filling a shallow container with sand or soil and hiding small "artifacts" such as buttons, beads, shells, toy bones, or broken pottery pieces. Carefully excavate using a spoon or paintbrush, recording where each object was found on a simple grid before removing it. Discuss why an artifact's location is just as important as the object itself.

Observation vs. Inference Lab
Look at pictures of ancient artifacts such as pottery, tools, jewelry, or arrowheads. For each object, write three observations (things you can directly see) and three inferences (ideas about what the object might have been used for or who used it). Compare your answers with someone else and notice how different people can draw different conclusions from the same evidence.

Stratigraphy Layer Activity
Build a model of archaeological layers using stacked colored paper, layers of sand, or even pudding with different colors. Hide small objects in different layers, then carefully uncover them from top to bottom. Use the layers to determine which objects are relatively older or younger and discuss how archaeologists use stratigraphy to study the past.

Context Changes Everything
Place the same object, such as a bowl, cup, or toy, in three different settings—a kitchen, a "burial site," and a "trash pit." Ask students what they think the object was used for in each location. Compare the answers and discuss how an artifact's context can completely change what archaeologists think it meant.

Broken Pot Mystery
Show students a picture of a broken pottery vessel or create your own "artifact" by breaking and reassembling a clay pot or inexpensive flowerpot. Challenge them to separate what they know for certain from what they are only guessing. Ask: What can we observe? What might have happened? What information can we never know for sure from the artifact alone?
