How was knowledge recorded and preserved?

This week, learners explore one of humanity's greatest challenges: how to preserve knowledge across generations. They discover that ancient civilizations developed many different ways to record information—from clay tablets and papyrus scrolls to bark-paper books, knotted cords, and highly trained oral traditions. Along the way, students investigate why some records survive while others disappear, how science explains the preservation of different materials, and how climate, decay, and human choices have shaped the historical record we have today.

SCIENCE FOCUS
This week explores the science of preservation and memory. Students investigate why different materials last for different lengths of time by examining decomposition, porosity, climate, and environmental conditions. They also explore how the human brain stores information through rhythm, repetition, and emotion, learning that oral traditions are sophisticated systems designed to preserve knowledge accurately across generations. Throughout the lesson, students see how both materials science and cognitive science help explain what survives from the ancient world.
