Build a Better Brick
Learners become ancient material engineers by experimenting with different mixtures to discover how ingredients affect the strength and durability of building materials. Using materials such as clay, sand, soil, and plant fibers like straw or grass, students create small “bricks” and test which designs hold their shape, resist cracking, or support weight. This activity connects to the way civilizations around the world used local resources to create adobe and fired bricks. Students discover that engineering is a process of testing, learning from failure, and improving designs based on evidence.

Design a Climate-Smart House
Learners become ancient architects and design a home adapted to a specific environment such as a desert, rainforest, snowy mountain, or coastal region. Students choose materials, wall thickness, roof shape, window placement, and building orientation, then explain how their choices help people stay comfortable. This activity connects to ancient examples like adobe homes, Pueblo architecture, and passive solar design by showing that buildings are solutions to environmental challenges. Students learn that there is no single “best” building style because the smartest designs depend on the needs of the environment.

The Roman Concrete Challenge
Learners investigate how ancient engineers created durable building materials by designing and testing their own concrete mixtures. Students combine different ingredients such as sand, gravel, clay, or other materials and compare how their mixtures perform after hardening. They test strength, cracking, or resistance to water and use their results to determine which mixture works best. This activity connects to Roman concrete and shows how ancient builders used experimentation and knowledge of materials to create technologies that lasted for centuries.

Sun Path Architecture Challenge
Learners investigate how the position of the sun affects building design by creating models and testing different architectural choices. Using a flashlight as the sun, students experiment with window placement, roof overhangs, and building orientation to see how shadows and sunlight change. They use their observations to design a structure that stays warmer or cooler depending on the environment. This activity connects to passive solar design and helps students understand how ancient builders used careful observation of nature to create comfortable spaces.
