Compare Two Places
Choose two modern cities, such as Denver and New Orleans or Anchorage and Miami, and investigate how geography has shaped each one. Learners can consider questions such as: How did the local landscape influence where the city was built? What advantages does the location provide for transportation, trade, farming, tourism, or resources? What challenges does the city face because of its geography, such as hurricanes, flooding, earthquakes, snow, or limited water? This activity helps learners see that geography still affects modern cities in many of the same ways it shaped ancient civilizations.

Would You Rather?
Use a series of “Would You Rather?” questions to spark discussion and help learners think like ancient settlers. Ask whether they would rather live beside a river that floods every year or on dry land with very little water, live behind protective mountains or beside the ocean, or have rich farmland that attracts frequent invasions or poor farmland with strong natural protection. Encourage learners to explain why they chose each option. These conversations often lead to deeper thinking about trade-offs, resources, safety, and the difficult decisions ancient people faced when choosing where to live. • Would you rather live on a large island or in the middle of a vast continent?
• Would you rather have a fast-flowing river nearby or a natural harbor on the coast?
• Would you rather live where earthquakes are common or where floods happen regularly?
• Would you rather have plenty of fresh water but little farmland or excellent farmland with limited water?
• Would you rather travel mostly by river or mostly by land?
• Would you rather have a civilization protected by deserts or by oceans?
• Would you rather live in a place with many natural resources but harsh weather or mild weather with fewer resources?
• Would you rather settle on a flat plain or in a narrow valley?
• Would you rather have neighbors close by for trade or be isolated and protected?
• Would you rather have long growing seasons but frequent droughts or short growing seasons with reliable rainfall?
• Would you rather live where food is easy to grow but building materials are scarce or where building materials are plentiful but farming is difficult?
• Would you rather be an ancient farmer along the Nile or an ancient sailor in Greece? Explain your choice.
