Farming the Ancient World
How did humans farm and feed large populations?


In this lesson, learners explore one of the greatest human innovations in history: the domestication of plants and the development of agriculture. They discover how wild grasses, fruits, and vegetables were gradually transformed into the crops that feed billions of people today through careful observation, selective breeding, and generations of experimentation. Rather than learning about farming as a single invention, learners investigate how people in Egypt, Mesopotamia, China, Mesoamerica, the Andes, and Australia developed different agricultural systems suited to their unique environments.
