Build a Shadow Clock
Big Idea
Ancient people did not need modern clocks to measure time. By carefully observing how the Sun changed the position and length of shadows throughout the day, they could create tools like sundials. In this activity, learners become ancient astronomers by collecting data, looking for patterns, and using observations to measure the movement of the Sun.

Materials
  • Wooden pencil, stick, or dowel
  • Modeling clay, play dough, or a cup of sand to hold the stick upright
  • Paper plate or piece of cardboard
  • Pencil or marker
  • Clock or timer
  • Optional: compass

What to Do

Step 1: Build Your Shadow Tool
Push the pencil or stick upright into the modeling clay so it stands straight up. Place it in the center of your paper plate or cardboard. This upright stick is called a gnomon (NOH-mon). Ancient sundials used a similar idea.

Step 2: Make Your First Observation
Place your shadow clock outside in a sunny location. Record the time and carefully mark where the end of the shadow falls. Write the time next to your mark.

Step 3: Track the Shadow
Every hour (or every 30 minutes if you want a bigger challenge), return to your shadow clock and mark the new location of the shadow. Record how the shadow changes.

Step 4: Analyze the Pattern
Look at your marks. What direction did the shadow move? When was the shadow longest? When was it shortest? Could you use this pattern to estimate the time without a clock?

What's Really Happening (Caregiver Explanation)
This activity recreates one of humanity's earliest timekeeping tools. The Sun appears to move across the sky because Earth is rotating. As the Sun's position changes, the angle of sunlight hitting the stick changes, causing the shadow to move and change length.

Ancient astronomers used this predictable pattern to create sundials. They did not need electricity, batteries, or complicated machines. They needed careful observation, patience, and an understanding that nature follows patterns.
Like modern scientists, ancient people collected data over time and used those observations to create explanations and tools.

Research ancient sundials from different cultures. How were Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Chinese sundials similar? How were they different? What problems would a sundial have in places with long winters, cloudy weather, or no direct sunlight?
