Big Idea
Ancient artists did not buy paint from a store. They experimented with natural materials like minerals, charcoal, and clay to create pigments. Different materials produced different colors and mixed differently with liquids, making some paints brighter, thicker, or longer-lasting than others.

Materials
  • Small amounts of natural pigments (choose any available)
    • Turmeric
    • Cocoa powder
    • Paprika
    • Cinnamon
    • Crushed chalk
    • Charcoal (from a fireplace or charcoal stick)
  • Small cups or muffin tin for mixing
  • Water
  • Small paintbrushes or cotton swabs
  • White paper or cardstock
  • Spoons or craft sticks for mixing
  • Paper towel for cleanup

What to Do

Step 1: Observe Your Pigments
Look closely at each natural material before mixing it. Record its color, texture, and whether you think it will make a good paint.

Step 2: Become an Ancient Artist
Place a small amount of each material into its own cup. Add a few drops of water and stir until it forms a paste or thin paint.
Try painting a small stripe of each color onto your paper.

Step 3: Compare Your Results
As each paint dries, compare the colors.
Ask yourself:
  • Which pigment made the brightest color?
  • Which was easiest to mix?
  • Which looked smooth?
  • Which looked grainy?
  • Which would you choose if you were decorating a temple or painting a mural?
Record your observations.

Step 4: Think Like a Scientist
Imagine that your paintings are buried underground for 2,000 years.
Which colors do you think might survive the longest?
Which pigments might fade or wash away?
How could scientists today discover what colors you originally used?

What's Really Happening (Caregiver Explanation)
For thousands of years, artists created paint by grinding natural materials into fine powders and mixing them with liquids that helped the pigment stick to a surface. The exact recipes varied from place to place and could include water, plant gums, oils, egg, or other natural binders.
Today, archaeologists and conservation scientists can identify many of these pigments because each mineral has its own unique chemical composition. Even when the color is no longer visible to our eyes, tiny particles can remain trapped in cracks or protected beneath the surface. Using microscopes, spectroscopy, ultraviolet light, and other scientific tools, researchers can identify these pigments and create accurate reconstructions of how ancient works of art originally looked.

Digging Deeper
Many ancient colors came from minerals found only in certain places. Research one ancient pigment, such as ochre, malachite, azurite, or cinnabar. Where was it found? How was it made into paint? Why might that color have been valuable enough to trade over long distances? What could finding that pigment tell archaeologists about trade between ancient civilizations?
