Design a Roman Water City:
Give learners a simple map of a town with hills, valleys, homes, farms, and public buildings. Challenge them to decide where to place an aqueduct, fountains, baths, and storage tanks so everyone has access to water. Afterward, discuss why they chose those locations and what challenges Roman engineers might have faced.
Build a Mini Qanat Model:
Using a shallow tray of sand or dirt, have learners create a simple underground tunnel leading from one side of the tray to the other. Add small vertical "maintenance shafts" using straws or dowels and slowly pour water into the higher end to see how gravity can move water beneath the surface. Compare how much water is lost from an underground system versus an open channel.
Create a Working Cistern:
Use a recycled plastic container or small box to design a model cistern. Add paper or cardboard channels leading into it to represent rainwater collection. Test different designs by pouring small amounts of water through the channels to see which collects the most water with the least spilling.
Flash Flood Challenge:
Build a landscape in a tray using sand, rocks, and small blocks. Pour water from one end to create a flash flood, then redesign the landscape with small dams, channels, or barriers inspired by the Nabataeans. Compare how well each design controls the water and protects the "city."
Engineer the Perfect Gradient: Place a long piece of cardboard on books and experiment with different slopes. Roll a marble first to see how steepness changes speed, then repeat with water flowing through a foil-lined channel. Record which angle allows water to flow steadily without rushing or stopping, just as Roman engineers had to do.
Water Around the World Map:
Using a world map, locate Rome, Persia (modern Iran), Petra in Jordan, Egypt, and Mesopotamia. Color-code regions based on how much water they naturally receive and draw the type of water system each civilization developed. Discuss how geography influenced each engineering solution.
Water Conservation Experiment:
Place equal amounts of water into one open container and one covered container (or one in the shade and one in direct sunlight). Observe the water over several days to see which loses more to evaporation. Connect the results to why Persian engineers built qanats underground.
Build the Pont du Gard:
Using craft sticks, LEGO bricks, sugar cubes, or blocks, recreate the famous Roman aqueduct bridge. Once complete, test whether a small channel can carry water across the top while remaining level enough to keep it flowing. Discuss why arches made Roman structures both beautiful and incredibly strong.
