Seed Detective
Learners compare several different seeds (beans, corn, sunflower, pumpkin, peas, etc.) using a magnifying glass. They observe size, shape, color, texture, and predict what kind of plant each seed will become. Afterwards, they discuss why different plants produce different kinds of seeds and how those traits help the plant survive.
Design a Farm Challenge
Give learners an environment such as a desert, mountain, rainforest, tundra, island, or river valley. Their challenge is to design a farming system that would work there. They choose crops, decide how to get water, protect the soil, and explain how their farm solves environmental challenges.
Build a Chinampa
Using a shallow container, water, soil, craft sticks, and natural materials, learners build a simple model of an Aztec chinampa. They explore how canals provide water and transportation while discussing why this system was so productive.
Terrace Engineering Challenge
Using books, cardboard, sand, or soil, learners build a model mountain and compare what happens when water flows down a steep slope versus a terraced slope. This activity demonstrates how terraces reduce erosion and make farming possible on mountainsides.
Compare Wild vs. Domesticated Plants
Learners research one modern crop—such as corn, bananas, carrots, tomatoes, or wheat, and then compare it with its wild ancestor. They identify the traits humans selected over thousands of years and discuss why those changes were beneficial.
Observe Like an Ancient Farmer
For one week, learners spend a few minutes each day observing the same outdoor area or garden. They record changes in sunlight, moisture, insects, plant growth, weather, and soil conditions. Afterwards, they discuss how careful observation helped ancient farmers make decisions long before modern science.
Build a Better Crop
Give learners a fictional wild plant with several traits (small seeds, bitter fruit, drought tolerance, weak stems, etc.). They choose one trait to improve each generation and explain why they selected it. After several "generations," they describe what their new crop looks like and what problem it solves.
